Open QuoteAccess to the water dispenser on the 2nd Floor in the Chelmsford library was sealed off with yellow ribbons.
There should be more drinking water dispensers in the library and there should be more than one in the whole library especially for situations like this.
There should one at the entrance and one on each floor! This should be part of the University Sustainability Strategy to save single use plastic.

Open QuoteThe library spaces are very comfortable and I always find the books I want, or I request them. The problem is with the printing system. From devices outside the library, you can’t print in colour or deactivate the two-sided option! These only appear if you are using a computer inside the library, which is very inconvenient. On top of that, not all computers in the library are well connected to the Print Anywhere system. I’ve found myself trying to send my files from up to four computers before finding one that is properly linked. For us MA Children’s Boom Illustration students it is crucial to print continuously our book tests and we suffer a lot from this! Please fix it🙏🏼

Open QuoteThe ARU Chelmsford Library is severely lacking in private study places. The downstairs rooms have now been given to staff despite the fact that this is a student library. I am a medical student and there is a lack of study space in the med building also. We are encouraged to do group work, but the staff and managers here continue to reduce rooms and space to work in.
The rooms which are closed until 5pm on weekdays are always empty, but we are still not allowed to use them.
Furthermore, they are usually opened on the weekend for students to use- but this has now changed, with all of them being locked.
There are no staff working in the library on the weekend so these study spaces should be opened for students.

Open QuoteBack in 2015, we used to have 2 screens (monitors) on the second floor of the library which was really helpful for us as students to use when working on academic writing.
This year, this has been removed and it is really harder to concentrate on writing efficiently without them.
I am aware of the screens available in the library and the rooms/pods, but those do not help with keeping track with the work when we have two different screen sizes (first one being the laptop and the second is a very large screen).
I really hope this is considered since this is the final year of my program.

Open QuoteI feel that many of us are quite disappointed about the new rule regarding the opening times of individual study spaces on the ground floor. I am aware that many students were not following the 'one person per room' rule which is why the rule was introduced, but this is not fair to all the other students who were adhering to the rule and using the space to study. Many like myself prefer to head to the library in the evenings after lectures and use the quiet space to get some work done, but now this is not possible as the rooms are not available from 5pm onwards. Unfortunately floors 1, 2 and 3 are never quiet, and therefore many of us prefer the individual study rooms downstairs.

I approached the librarian to explain the issue very politely explaining I could not print, and I was met with a rather dismissive and rude tone and he said to me rather abruptly “I don’t know what you want me to reply to that...” with a few other snide comments. I think you can agree during this time that university is very difficult for many students especially regarding mental health struggles and it is completely unacceptable for a librarian, who’s job is to assist and help students, to talk to students in the library in this manner.

Open QuoteYour Harvard Referencing website is excellently presented and clear. It's used by many other institutions to give students a clear guide/reference.

To tell us how to correctly cite, the word 'author' is unclear. For many students, especially foreign nationals, 'author' does not make it clear that what is required is the 'SURNAME' of the author.

However, I do feel that allowing this requires harsher monitoring of this rule. Following from this pilot, I have noticed that the condition of the ground floor has drastically changed. It's very messy, people are leaving behind their rubbish, food is being stamped into the carpet. Sometimes it is in quite an appauling state. The commenter said 'I love coming to the library regularly to have a nice environment to work in' however the situation raised means ' This has thoroughly put me off visiting the library especially to work on the ground floor.'

Open QuoteI am studying a Foundation Degree in Nursing at present. Therefore I still work full time and only attend the University 1 day a week (though this changes periodically as we have placements). During normal term times, the libary is open 24 hours most of the week, so it was easy to come in early and study. This is not the case at the moment. The libary now opens at either 8am, or in the case of the week beginning 13 August, 8:30. As most of our university day start at 9am, it gives very little time to go into the libary, especially if we are due to be in another building

Open QuoteHi, This morning I noticed your question, 'Why use the library?', on the board in the entrance hall. I want to take this opportunity to say how much I appreciate Anglia Ruskin library in Cambridge. It is such a calm and civilised space. The librarians are really well-informed and helpful, and they are on hand to offer guidance. The book stock is always reliably well-ordered and accessible. Long live the library! Long live librarians - the unsung heroes and heroines of the academic world.
Thank you for all the reading!

Open QuoteHi! Is there any chance the library services can be reviewed so it opens approximately 7-7.30am? It is very inconveniencing for students as we sometimes have things to print out before lectures which usually start at 09.00hrs. The computers outside the Library are never enough for all students and we often have to take it in turns to use them but not enough times for waiting, Thank you

Open QuoteAs you are aware the University cannot afford to pay for Agency Security Cover to open the Library during the following times :

Monday 00:01 to 8 AM
Saturday 00:01 to 10 AM
Sunday 00:01 to 10 AM

There are 2 Security People from Monday to Thursday from 9 pm onwards, while during the weekends until Midnight there is only 1 Security Person.

Why do you not just have 1 Security Person and open the Library for the extra 26 hours cover that the Library is closed and this would be cost neutral for the University.

Students require access to study areas as it is nearly Exam and Coursework submission time.

I have had a look online and couldnt find another UK University that does not have a 24/7 Library.

Open QuoteI noticed recently that our subscription to EEBO has expired, and we now have JISC historical texts instead. Is it possible to renew our EEBO subscription? Jisc has a less powerful search tool and a much less user friendly UI. Furthermore, EEBO is the standard used by multiple rare book databases (for example, the ESTC links directly to EEBO), and using JISC means that these services no longer work as intended. For those of us working with historical material, EEBO is a highly valued resource.

Open QuoteYesterday there wasnt any soap in the dispenser in 1 of the 2 toilets on the second floor of the Chelmsford Library. Today the toilet paper was jammed (again)in the Toilet Paper Dispenser. This is a regular occurence, due to the design of the Toilet Paper Dispenser, despite a near enough full Toilet Roll inside and there was absolutely no way of trying to get it to come back out again of the tiny hole it dispenses from. The good thing is that the Cleaner is now leaving a spare toilet roll however there is no where to put this in the toilet cubicle ie no ledge or shelf, so it ends up on the floor getting dirty and wet and no one can use it. I would suggest either leaving the key for the Toilet Roll Dispenser in place as this would make it possible to pull the toilet paper back out through More >>

Open QuoteCan you please address the cleaning issue at Chelmsford Toilets at the weekend. Whilst I appreciate in interests of cost cutting you do not have cover over over the weekends, leaving toilets last checked at 5 pm on a Friday (I believe they are actually only cleaned ie with a mop and bucket and surfaces wiped down at around 8.30 am in the morning on a weekday anyway ) until Monday 8.30 am is a long time. This weekend there was no toilet roll in the 2nd Floor Toilets, so I ventured out to the Queens 1st Floor Toilets ( I avoid the Queens Ground Floor Toilets at all costs as they are always filthy) to find the toilet had no soap. This is not a one off it happens regularly and has happened increasingly over the last couple of weekends. It would be ok I suppose if I was referring to some toilets in a far fetched place of the university that no one visited, but these are the all toilets that are visited by visitors especially with Open Days and other events happening all the time at the weekend. Not sure this is the example you would like to set. The cleaning sheets by 'Wyclean' (why clean such a fitting name) are signed all in one go including in advance and there is no way of knowing when the last time they did actually visit. Hope their contract is up for renewal soon, would suggest cancelling it and recruiting students who would happily work for 7.20 an hour through the Employment Bureau im sure they it would be much cheaper for you and the toilets would be cleaner.

The ground floor seems to just be a social club, the first floor usually has one or two people in it who have lower standards for what constitutes as quiet, and the silent area is frequently plagued by people who don't seem to understand the concept of silence at all.
