Friday 3rd December is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities

03 December 2021

Library services and facilities for people with disabilities.

The aim of the day is to spread awareness of disability in every aspect of life. As Covid-19 has had an impact and led to increased isolation and diminished support services around the globe, the theme this year is ‘Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 world.’ - https://www.un.org/development/desa/disabilities/international-day-of-persons-with-disabilities-3-december/2021-2.html .

With this in mind, we want to highlight some of the things the library does to help you and your friends - students with visible and invisible disabilities:

  • We provide assistance at the library help desks.

  • The extra wide entrance gates are suitable for wheelchairs.

  • Hearing loops are provided at help desks and in teaching rooms.

  • Lifts are available.

  • Guide dogs are welcome.

  • You can contact us before you visit by email or phone if you would like to check that we have what you need. You can also contact us to tell us about any problem you may be having with library services - ARU | University Library: Our Virtual Help Desk

  • If you have an assessment from Student Services which identifies that you would find it physically difficult to collect books from the shelves yourself, you can use our request collection service. This enables you to request books online and pick them up from our request shelves. There’s more about Student Services disability and dyslexia support at Disability and dyslexia (sharepoint.com)

  • You can contact us to authorise another person to collect items on your behalf.

  • We have assistive resources such as document and book holders, writing slopes, coloured overlays and book baskets.

  • There are height adjustable desks.

  • Accessibility options on the university desktop include the Balabolka text to speech program.

  • Ebooks have accessibility features such as the ability to enlarge and change background colours.
